Another sequel opened this week in North American theatres, The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor. The new entry in the franchise just took out top spot for Friday over the blockbuster juggernaut, The Dark Knight. Reviews are soft for The Mummy 3 which begs the question, will it be able to stop Batman's superior superhero flick from taking top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row?

In other franchise news, the latest X-Files Movie has bombed dramatically, down 76% from last weekend. It may not even reach $20 million domestically. What was a powerhouse franchise is nothing more than a memory.

Mamma Mia! had another strong showing considering its genre type, up another 3.8 million taking its total to 78 million. The other opener, the Kevin Costner "Swing Vote" bombed without a trace, taking in only 1.9 million.
