The new stoner movie THE PINEAPPLE
EXPRESS took out top spot on Friday, but only just, over THE
DARK KNIGHT, taking in an estimated 7.9 million in North American
theatres. Batman and Co. took in an estimated 7.6 million which
would seem to suggest that it's not out of the question the film
could be at the top of the box office for a fourth straight weekend.
THE DARK KNIGHT is currently sitting on a total tally of 423.1 million.
THE
MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR slipped to third, earning
4.8 million. The franchise may be over now as reviews are soft and
the film unlikely to recoup its reported $145 million budget. The
film now stands with a tally of 59.3 million.
Another new opener, THE SISTERHOOD
OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS 2 opened to 3.95 million. MAMMA
MIA added another 2.4 million to its gross, while HANCOCK
is still in the top 10, adding another 1 million to to bring its
total box office take to 219.4 million.
THE
X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE is now out of the top 10, adding
a small $335,000 to take its total box office tally to 18.8 million.
The box office in total took in 33.6
million for the whole of Friday 8th August 2008.
