The amazing story for the weekend is The Dark Knight
taking out top spot for an incredible fourth weekend in a row. This
is a rare occurrence in this day and age of Hollywood blockbusters.
It's current box office total stands at a phenomenal 441.5 million.
The new stoner movie, THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, took
out top spot on Friday but settled for second. This is a great result
for this film as its budget is only 27 million.
The other new opener THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING
PANTS 2 will have to work a little to recoup its budget of 27 million
with a softer opening of 10.7 million.
THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR fell back
to Earth this weekend, losing 60% of its audience from the previous
weekend. The current total for the film stands at 70.6 million and
combined with overseas grosses, the film is likely to make its money
back but not impressively enough to warrant another entry in the
franchise.
Hancock, Wall-E and Mamma Mia! are all hanging in
the top 10, consistently bringing in decent box office takes each
weekend since their openings.
The total box office for 8-10 August
2008 at the North American Box Office came to 109.5 million.
