Two new films opened the box office this week.
TROPIC
THUNDER opened on Wednesday, but on Friday earned 8.2 million
to take its current total to 19.2 million after three days. STAR
WARS: THE CLONE WARS also opened on Friday with 6.25 million. Solid
numbers but hardly spectacular, particularly for the second title
which didn't come close to the lofty heights of the live action
Star Wars films.
The big story over the past month
has been the performance of THE
DARK KNIGHT which has now slipped to third in the box office
but has raked in an incredible 459.7 million. The superhero flick
took in another 5 million on Friday and should be on its way to
finishing with around 500-520 million in the domestic box office
kitty.
Last week's new opener, THE PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, slipped
to fifth this weekend, adding another 3.2 million for a total of
56.1 million. This is a profitable title as its budget was only
27 million.
THE
MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR looks to be disappearing soon,
taking in only another 2.45 million on Friday. It's currently total
sits at 80.5 million. With a budget of 145 million, you'd have to
expect this will be the last Mummy film we will see for a very long
time.
The box office in total took in 35.95
million for the whole of Friday 15th August 2008.
