The summer blockbuster season has
finally come to an end, with the box office slowing down during
the hot North American summer.
The new Vin Diesel film, BABYLON A.D.,
opened in top spot on Friday with 3.1 million. With a budget of
70 million, this is hardly a great start but we'll have to wait
and see what happens.
TROPIC
THUNDER nestles in to second spot with another 3 million. It's
total is now up to 75 million and is getting close to breaking even
at the domestic box office.
THE HOUSE BUNNY plummets to third,
taking in another 2.6 million. The Don Cheadle starrer TRAITOR opened
in fourth with 2.2 million, but given its more adult subject matter,
it may end up with the same amount as BABYLON A.D. by the end of
the weekend.
The reigning champ of the 2008 box
office, THE
DARK KNIGHT, is still going strong, although the air is starting
to come out of its tires. Batman pulled in another 2.2 million to
bring its impressive total to 495 million.
The other notable story is MAMMA
MIA! This leggy musical has been sticking around for a long
time, not having very significant drops from weekend to weekend.
It took in 1.2 million on Friday and has a great total of 128.2
million against a production budget of 52 million
The North American box office in total
took in 19.8 million for the whole of Friday 29th August 2008.
