There seems to be no stopping The
Dark Knight.
On Monday 4th August, it became the
fastest film in history to reach $400 million, accomplishing the
feat in just 18 days. To understand how impressive that is, the
previous record holder, Shrek 2, did it in 43 days. Wow.
So where to from here? It seems likely
that The Dark Knight will fall short of Titanic's seemingly untouchable
$600 million domestic gross tally, but it seems extremely likely
to be second as perhaps the only $500 million earner in history.
The film works on all levels, but the X factor may have been Heath
Ledger's final fate. It's hard to tell one way or another.
It's great to see in this day and
age of the soulless blockbuster that a film of such quality and
depth has become such a cultural phenomenon. Hopefully studios will
make more film like this. I know many fans out there can’t
wait for the next one! If nothing else, we’re all pleading
to Christopher Nolan to come back for one more Bat outing!
