Friday saw a couple of new films enter
the market place, although the overall box office tally was about
the same as last Friday.
The number one film for Friday is
the Liam Neeson action flick, TAKEN,
earning an estimated $9.3M. This film had been released in other
territories months before this US release, but nonetheless, it has
opened strongly and will likely have a strong weekend.
The number two film for Friday is
another new opener, THE UNINVITED with an estimated $4.3M. It should
have a decent opening over the weekend.
Returning films PAUL BLART: MALL COP
and GRAN TORINO saw more good returns, with $4.15M and $$2.6M respectively.
The latter has now crossed the $100M barrier and will likely become
Clint Eastwood's biggest earner soon.
UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS crashed
back in to fifth spot with $2.5M. This film is following the trajectory
of its predecessors, but has earned enough to possibly warrant another
sequel/prequel.
NEW IN TOWN is the last new opener
in the top 10, earning an estimated $2.4M. The remaining films include
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE ($2.3M), HOTEL FOR DOGS ($2M), MY BLOODY VALENTINE
3-D ($1.5M), and BRIDE WARS ($1.2M).
The North American box office in total
took in $32.3 million for the whole of Friday 30th January 2009.
