Overall, the US Box Office was down 20% on last
weekend's total gross, despite some strong takings from some new
openers and returning films.
The number one film for the weekend
is TAKEN, the Liam
Neeson action/thriller flick. This film has already played well
overseas for several months prior to the US domestic release, and
has scored very well this weekend and will likely be a good earner
in the long run for distributor Fox.
THE UNINVITED was another opener this weekend, landing
in third spot. This horror film has an okay start but may drop off
quickly in the next week.
The other new opener for the weekend is the Renee
Zellweger romantic comedy NEW IN TOWN, which did not set the world
on fire with a very average $6.75M.
The remaining films held as expected,
with the notable exception of UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS which
plummeted to seventh spot. Following the path of its predecessers,
the film should disappear from the top 12 as early as next week.
The US Box Office took in an estimated
total of $103.2 million for the whole of the weekend 30 January
- 1 February 2009.
