Overall, the US Box Office was up 28% on last weekend's total gross, with horror replacing the romantic comedy as the primary genre of choice for the viewing public. Also of note is that the top 7 films all grossed at least $10M.

The number one film, and a huge winner given its miniscule $19M budget is the horror remake FRIDAY THE 13TH which stormed the box office gates and took a mammoth estimated $42M over the weekend. This is a huge win for New Line Cinema and producer Michael Bay; even if the film's box office revenue goes south from today (and it probably will), the film is already in the black more than twice over.

Last weekend's number one, HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU, dropped to second spot, losing about 50% of its audience to earn a solid estimated $19.6M for the weekend. This is still the romantic comedy of choice, particularly as CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC opened in an unimpressive fourth spot this weekend with an estimated $15M. Unfortunately the Isla-Fisher starring gimmick romantic comedy just didn't have the power to open strongly, and given that feedback on the film appears to be worse than FRIDAY THE 13TH, it will be disappearing soon.

TAKEN lands in number three spot and is still going strong, dropping only 6% from the previous weekend and earning an estimated $19.2M. The Liam Neeson action film is doing remarkably well, especially given the opening of FRIDAY THE 13TH which could have stolen this film's audience, but it appears the film may have a more broader appeal given its ability to consistently churn out very solid box office numbers.

The only other opener this weekend is THE INTERNATIONAL, which really sputtered out of the gate with a measly $10M. The budget on this Clive Owen-Naomi Watts starrer was $50M so it may have trouble getting that back domestically given the very average feedback and soft opening.
