12. Gran Torino

Overall, the Box Office was down 26%
on last weekend's total gross.
Tyler Perry has come out of the box
very strongly again, with another film in his long line of hits
with MADEA GOES TO JAIL taking number one spot with an estimated
$41M. This marks the second time in February that a film has crossed
$40M. Tyler Perry has struck gold yet again and will no doubt be
churning out more hits in the near future.
Liam Neeson and his action flick TAKEN
are still surprising nearly everyone. The film earned an estimated
$11.4M this weekend. The film has grossed $95M in the US alone,
and has managed to stay in the Top 3 since opening five weeks ago.
This type of box office behaviour is generally unheard of, especially
for a film of this genre.
Oscar favourite SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
got a strong boost in ticket sales this weekend with the Academy
Awards on Sunday. The film had a 10% increase in sales over last
weekend and is rapidly closing in on $100M in total box office against
a budget of only $15M.
Last weekend's number one champ FRIDAY
THE 13TH, which slaughtered the box office with an incredible $42M
opening weekend absolutely died this weekend, losing 80% of its
audience to earn a paltry $7.8M. The film has already earned its
budget several times over which is a good thing for this film as
the game is now over.
The US Box Office took in an estimated
total of $119.7 million for the whole of the weekend 20-22 February
2009.
