Friday saw a 33% decrease in box office
revenue over the previous Friday.
The box office was relatively unremarkable
this weekend. Ticket sales slumped a significant margin with no
new films making significant starts and the holdover films continuing
to do good, but declining business.
The number one film for Friday is
JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3-D CONCERT EXPERIENCE which earned an estimated
$4.8M on Friday. Basically a filmed concert with some documentary
footage thrown in, it's amazing that something like this would end
up at the top of the box office but there you go, some times you
get surprised. It may be in first spot for Friday but it will probably
lose out to the number two film for Friday, TYLER PERRY'S MADEA
GOES TO JAIL which earned an estimated $4.4M. I'd say Perry will
be getting a number one spot with this film by the end of the weekend.
SLUMDOG
MILLIONAIRE, this year's Best Picture winner saw an increase
in ticket sales of 53% and jumping in to third place with an estimated
$3.2M. Against a production budget of only $19M, this film has now
earned $106M and is one of the big winners of 2008/9 thanks to incredible
word of mouth and the Oscars.
The Liam Neeson action flick TAKEN
refuses to die, dropping only 17.5% on last week's numbers to earn
an estimated $2.85M for Friday. The film has now grossed over $100M
at the US Box Office and has a world-wide total of $171.5M.
The only other new opener for Friday
is STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI which did not set the box
office on fire with its palty estimated $1.7M.
The other films in the Top 10 for
Friday were, HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU ($1.9M), CONFESSIONS OF
A SHOPAHOLIC ($1.4M), PAUL BLART: MALL COP ($1.4M), FIRED UP ($1.3M)
and CORALINE ($1.1M).
The North American box office in total
took in $24.4 million for the whole of Friday 27th February 2009.
