Friday saw a 52% increase in box office
revenue over the previous Friday.
Leading the charge out of the gate
was the first official blockbuster of 2009, with an estimated $25.1M
in first place, the new graphic novel adaptation WATCHMEN. Despite
the huge promotion and anticipation for this release, the film only
achieved moderate blockbuster status, particularly in comparison
to director Zack Snyder's previous winner 300. The film will have
a strong opening weekend but Warner Bros. were probably looking
for a little more from this one.
The remaining films all fell in to
the shadow of WATCHMEN with even the number two film only earning
10% of WATCHMEN's take. TYLER PERRY'S MADEA GOES TO JAIL lands in
second spot with an estimated $2.5M on Friday, still earning decent
revenue and moving its total domestic box office take over $70M.
The film that refuses to give up,
much like the character Liam Neeson plays in said film is TAKEN,
the number three film for Friday which only dropped 20% on last
Friday, earning an estimated $2.3M. This film continues to defy
all box office logic, having earned an impressive $112M domestically
with an additional $72.2M internationally.
This year's Best Picture, SLUMDOG
MILLIONAIRE, holds in fourth spot with an estimated $1.9M. The
film has earned an impressive $120M in domestic box office gross
thus far against a $19M budget.
The remaining films for Friday read
as the previous week, including: HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU ($1.3M),
PAUL BLART: MALL COP ($1.1M), CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC ($1M),
FIRED UP ($0.9M), JONAS BROTHERS: THE 3-D CONCERT EXPERIENCE ($0.85),
and CORALINE ($0.8M).
The North American box office in total
took in $38 million for the whole of Friday 6th March 2009.
