Overall, the Box Office was up 11%
on last weekend's total gross.
With three new films opening and leading
the box office this weekend, the list of films was finally re-shuffled
around with some of the long standing holdovers finally slipping
in position to make way for the new entries. There were no big stories
for the weekend, but the top four films each managed to earn more
than $13M a piece.
The new Nicolas Cage disaster flick
KNOWING opened the box office with a solid $24.8M. It's hard to
know where this will be heading in the weeks to come, but word of
mouth has not been kind and it may struggle to build on this decent
start.
The comedy I Love You, Man opened
in second spot with a solid $18M. This film was well received and
may do well in the coming days and weeks.
The new star vehicle DUPLICITY,
starring Julia Roberts and Clive Owen opened unspectacularly with
$14M. Given the calibre of stars and the more cerebral nature of
the production (ie appeal to adults), this film has certainly under-performed
and is likely a consequence of Roberts' lack of profile in recent
years and Owen's love/hate relationship with the audience.
RACE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN held on relatively
well in the face of the new competition, earning a decent $13M and
only losing 46% of its audience in its second weekend. Disney has
done it again, even if it had to mine old material to do it.
WATCHMEN
holds on to fifth spot this weekend with a relatively small $6.7M
take. Warner Brothers has now officially stated they will be moving
away from R-rated superhero and tentpole films in the future, with
the feeling that the R rating for WATCHMEN severely impacted its
gross.
The US Box Office took in an estimated
total of $97.4 million for the whole of the weekend 20-22 March
2009.
