Friday saw a 2.5% decrease in box
office revenue over the previous Friday.
Opening in first spot on Friday is
the latest Miley Cyrus/Disney money-making machine, HANNAH MONTANA
THE MOVIE which earned an estimated $17.4M. Although there will
be a huge drop off in the coming week or so in box office, this
is a great outcome for Disney as costs are likely to be very low.
Plummeting from its comprehensive
win last Friday is the number two film FAST AND FURIOUS which managed
to lost 65% of its audience to earn an estimated $10.5M. The film
was in the black after four days any way (it now stands with just
under $100M domestic against an $85M budget) but this massive drop
from last Friday indicates a much softer second weekend for a film
that has no staying power and will likely disappear very soon.
The new CG-animated kids flick MONSTERS
VS ALIENS held on quite well in third spot with an estimated
$9M and managing to increase its audience by 3% from last Friday.
The film now stands with a grand total of $127M at the domestic
box office but it may find it hard to reach its $175M budget in
the US.
The latest Seth Rogen comedy OBSERVE
AND REPORT debuts in an unspectacular fourth spot on Friday, earning
an estimated $4.7M. Although it is apparently better than PAUL BLART:
MALL COP, the fact that it has a superficially similar story (the
lead character is a security officer in a mall) may have dented
this film's ability to reach an audience given the latter had done
so quite unexpectedly well earlier in the year.
The only other new opener for Friday
is DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION from Fox which earned an estimated $2M.
Based on a popular Japanese manga comic, the film was not well received
by audiences or critics and is a dud out of the box.
The remaining box office estimated
for films for Friday are: KNOWING
($2.37M), THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT ($2.35M), I LOVE YOU, MAN
($2.3M), ADVENTURELAND ($1.2M), and DUPLICITY
($1M).
The North American box office took
in an estimated total of $53.1 million for the whole of Friday 10th
April 2009.
