Friday saw a 4.1% increase in box
office revenue over the previous Friday.
A number of new films hit the market
place this Friday but none made any major in roads in to what was
a fairly sluggish day at the box office, much like last Friday.
The number one film this Friday with
an estimated $11.1M is the Beyonce-starring thriller OBSESSED. This
number is decent for the popstar, and the film should earn a good
return over the remainder of the weekend. However word-of-mouth
was not kind to the flick and it will likely struggle in the coming
weeks as the summer season starts in earnest next weekend.
The number two film for Friday is
FIGHTING, the indie-flick from Rogue Pictures which earned an estimated
$4.4M. The poorly reviewed and received street fighting film will
have an okay opening but disappear quickly.
Crashing to third spot is last weekend's
number one champ, 17 AGAIN, which earned an estimated $3.8M on Friday.
The Zac Efron starrer lost 59.1% of its audience from last Friday
but given this may not have cost that much, the film has done well
so far to earn $32M in total at the box office.
A new opener lands in fourth spot
in THE SOLOIST, earning an estimated $3.2M on Friday. This star-power
film with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr. in the leads did not
make much of an impression, despite being decently received by critics.
Disney expands in to wide-release
documentaries with EARTH, the fifth spot film for Friday which earned
an estimated $2.9M after opening on Wednesday. The documentary has
been very well reviewed, and is earning well for a documentary with
curent total of $8.5M in box office after three days.
The Russell Crowe-Ben Affleck star
vehicle STATE OF PLAY crashes in to sixth spot after opening in
second spot last Friday, earning an estimated $2.08M. This cannot
be good news for the film which should have played much better given
the competition (or lack thereof) this weekend and that it has been
well received critically.
The remaining box office estimates
for Friday are as follows: MONSTERS
VS ALIENS ($2M), FAST AND FURIOUS ($1.9M), HANNAH MONTANA THE
MOVIE ($1.7M), and CRANK: HIGH VOLTAGE ($0.8M).
The North American box office took
in an estimated total of $34.2 million for the whole of Friday 24th
April 2009.
