Overall, the Box Office was up 3.8%
on last weekend's total gross.
Pop-star Beyonce rules the box office
this weekend with the opening of her new film OBSESSED in first
place with an impressive $28.6M. The film cost a small $20M to make
so it is already in the black. It would appear that much of Beyonce's
music audience followed her in to the film.
Last weekend's number one film 17
AGAIN lands in second spot with $11.5M, down 51.4% from last weekend.
The film only barely came out ahead of the number three film FIGHTING
which earned an estimated $11M in its debut weekend.
Fourth spot goes to THE SOLOIST, another
opening film for this weekend which earned a somewhat mediocre $9.7M.
Starring Jamie Fox and Robert Downey Jr, the film received some
good reviews and will need that good word of mouth to sustain its
box office over the coming days and weeks.
Fifth spot goes to EARTH, a new documentary
from Disney which has opened strongly for its genre, having earned
over $14M domestically since opening on Wednesday and earning a
worldwide total of $79M so far. This is another example of how documentaries
can earn big money on theatrical release in to cinemas.
MONSTERS
VS ALIENS closes in on its production budget this weekend, earning
$8.5M to bring its total domestic box office to $174M against its
$175M budget. The film has held well since opening five weeks ago
but given the size of its budget the return does not seem all that
spectacular, despite the fact it will turn a profit starting this
week.
Last weekend's number two film, STATE
OF PLAY, crashes to seventh spot this weekend, earning only $6.8M
and losing 51% of its audience. Given the star power of Ben Affleck
and Russell Crowe, and the fact that the film was decently reviewed,
this has to be considered disappointing.
FAST AND FURIOUS is still holding
well, earning another $6.2M this weekend to bring its domestic total
to $145M against an $85M budget. Although it dropped precipitously
after its $70M+ opening weekend four weeks ago, the film has done
well for its genre, and especially considering the huge drop-offs
in subsequent weekends of the previous films in the franchise.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $104,225,059 for the whole of the weekend 24-26 April 2009.
