Overall, the Box Office was up 44.3%
on last weekend's total gross.
The US summer box office season kicked
off in earnest with a big return from its first blockbuster, X-MEN
ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. The fourth film in the franchise earned
a fantastic $85M over the weekend. Although its predecessor X-MEN:
THE LAST STAND earned substantially more over its first weekend,
this has to be seen as a big win for Fox considering how the last
film left a bad taste in the audience's mouth and that this instalment,
although slightly better received, is not doing much better in that
department. The film will turn a profit thanks to this huge opening
weekend, but look for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE to have a healthy
drop next weekend before quickly dropping out of the top 10.
Landing in a distant second is the
Matthew McConaughy-Jennifer Garner romantic comedy GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS
PAST which had to settle for a much smaller $15.4M over the weekend.
From all accounts the film is less than average and this one will
likely suffer in a big way once more blockbusters appear over the
coming weeks.
The Beyonce-Knowles thriller OBSESSED
surprisingly still held well in its second weekend, earning $12M.
The film has earned an impressive $46.8M since opening, all against
a tiny $20M budget.
MONSTERS
VS ALIENS finally recouped its $175M budget back this week,
earning $5.6M over the weekend to take its total box office to a
healthy $182M. The film will still likely do well over the coming
weeks but will have to make room for the big films coming throughout
the rest of May.
The only other new opener in the top
12 is BATTLE FOR TERA, which earned a little over $1M. This is as
far up the box office chain as this Lionsgate animated flick will
get.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $150,419,035 for the whole of the weekend 1-3 May 2009.
