Overall, the Box Office was down 5.1%
on last weekend's total gross.
The second big blockbuster for the
summer season rolled in to theatres this weekend with the return
of the age-old sci-fi franchise STAR
TREK, which earned an impressive $75M over the weekend and $79M
since opening Thursday night. The average gross of any of the previous
ten feature films in the series was $75M so this new eleventh film
has managed to eclipse that only after three days. Word of mouth
is spectacular so the film should see some decent business for the
rest of the summer, however how much business still remains a question.
We are in unchartered territory here as J.J. Abrams and his crew
have effectively started a new franchise with their space adventure,
where the patterns of the previous films no longer apply.
Tumbling from its huge opening last
weekend to second place is X-MEN
ORIGINS: WOLVERINE which lost a huge 69% of its audience to
earn $26M. Although STAR
TREK took much of the same audience away from Hugh Jackman's
latest effort, word of mouth is the most likely culprit of its massive
decline. The drop is in line with the previous film X-MEN: THE LAST
STAND which was not highly regarded either. Another sequel has already
been greenlit so the filmmakers have to do a better job next time
out if they do not want to completely destroy the reputation of
this once respected franchise.
GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST managed
to hold well in spite of the strong competition, earning another
$10M and losing only a tiny 33% of its audience. This is really
the own date film going at the moment which should explain its decent
hold, however it may struggle soon with more blockbusters entering
the race. The same can be said for the Beyonce Knowles thriller
OBSESSED which is still doing great business, having earned an impressive
total of $56.2M since opening against a $20M budget.
The only other new opener this weekend
is the action comedy NEXT DAY AIR which got lost in the shuffle
with only a soft $4.1M over the weekend. Look for this to disappear
quickly and end up on DVD shortly thereafter.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $142,771,951 for the whole of the weekend 8-10 May 2009.
