Friday saw a 4.5% increase in box
office revenue over the previous Friday.
Surprising most pundits by hitting
the top spot on Friday over Disney/Pixar's box office juggernaut
UP is the comedy THE HANGOVER which stormed out of the gate with
an estimated $16.5M. The well received R-rated comedy was a big
hit with audiences and critics alike which should lead to an amazing
$40M+ weekend.
Landing in second place but still
doing incredibly well is Disney/Pixar's UP, which earned an estimated
$13.5M on its second Friday. The film was a small 37% down on last
Friday and crossed the $100M threshold to now have $106M in the
box office kitty. The film is looking at a weekend over $40M and
may give THE HANGOVER a run for its money for top spot.
Opening in third place is the new
Will Farrell film LAND OF THE LOST. The film earned an estimated
$7.2M on Friday. Only loosed based on the original television series,
the film was not at all well received by its audience with the general
consensus being that it was an exercise is Farrell's brand of idiotic
and adult comedy than a kid-friendly entertainment and will likely
upset a lot of parents who brought their children to see the film
after being given the impression from the film's trailers that it
was a kiddie flick.
Fourth place goes to NIGHT AT THE
MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN which earned an estimated $4.5M
on Friday. The film is doing better than its Memorial Day Weekend
competitor TERMINATOR SALVATION which found itself languishing in
sixth place on Friday with an estimated $2.53M. The former has managed
to generate $117M in domestic box office while the latter has not
even managed to get to $100M yet (although it should do so this
weekend). Both films are big disappointments for their studios.
Sam Raimi's new horror flick DRAG
ME TO HELL finds itself in fifth place this Friday with an estimated
$2.57M. Although highly regarded by Raimi's horror fans and critics
in general, the film has not been able to break out and is currently
sitting with $23.7M, a far cry from the successes Raimi is used
to with his Spiderman films.
The remaining box office estimates
for films on Friday are as follows: STAR
TREK ($2.52M), ANGELS
& DEMONS ($2M), MY LIFE IN RUINS ($1.1M), and DANCE FLICK
($0.6M).
The North American box office took
in an estimated total of $53.2 million for the whole of Friday 5th
June 2009.
