Friday saw a 23.1% decrease in box
office revenue over the previous Friday.
One of the most unlikely films of
2009 to have a second weekend at number one is THE HANGOVER which
earned an estimated $10.4M on Friday to take out the top spot. The
film is on track for over $30M over the weekend and has only lost
37.6% of its audience from last Friday, making this one of the most
successful films of the year.
Landing in second spot is Disney/Pixar's
UP which earned an estimated $8.8M on Friday. The film has held
extremely well, on par with other Pixar releases and is on track
for a big $30M in its third weekend of release.
The first new opener for this Friday
is THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 which earned an estimated $8.2M on
Friday which can be regarded as a disappointment given the star
power of Denzel Washington and John Travolta. The hostage thriller
may draw a more adult audience over the weekend but it will not
do so much business given the competition from the top two films
this Friday. The same can be said for the other new opener IMAGINE
THAT which is way back down in sixth spot with an estimated $1.8M.
Eddie Murphy's latest film has barely caused a ripple in the box
office ocean and has definitely been lost in the shuffle with the
other family films that are in the top 10.
Fourth and fifth spots are quite close
with NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN landing in fourth
and the hugely budgeted disaster of a film LAND OF THE LAST taking
out fifth spot. They earned, respectively, an estimated $2.97M and
$2.9M on Friday. Although the former has generated more revenue
against box office, the same cannot be said for the latter which
is tanking fairly quickly, having only earned $28M since opening.
The remaining box office estimates
for films on Friday are as follows: STAR
TREK ($1.5M), TERMINATOR
SALVATION ($1.3M), DRAG ME TO HELL ($1.3M), and ANGELS
& DEMONS ($1.2M).
The North American box office took
in an estimated total of $40.78 million for the whole of Friday
12th June 2009.
