Overall, the Box Office was down 17.9%
on last weekend's total gross.
Defying all box office expectations
by finishing in the top spot for a second weekend in a row is the
surprise comedy smash hit THE HANGOVER which managed to lose only
27% of its audience from last weekend to earn a fantastic $32.7M.
The film only cost $35M to make and has grossed a massive $104.7M
domestically in 10 days. This film will be one of the most talked
about box office stories for 2009 as no one saw this coming.
Moving more in to "meeting expectations"
territory is the Disney/Pixar release UP, which earned a strong
$30.7M in its third weekend, dropping only 30% on last weekend.
The film has earned an impressive $187M since opening, eclisping
its $175M budget and will likely finish between $250-$300M.
The first new opener for the weekend
had an okay start with $23.3M over the weekend, THE TAKING OF PELHAM
1 2 3. The Denzel Washington-John Travolta hostage thriller did
about the usual business that Washington's previous films have done
over the years. The film finished stronger than expected after opening
to $8M on Friday. At this stage the film may or may not hold well
as reaction seems to be split down the middle on this one.
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE
SMITHSONIAN and LAND OF THE LOST take out fourth and fifth spots
as the only other potential family films for the weekend, although
that 'family film' claim is dubious in the case of the latter. The
films earned $9.6M and $8.9M respectively. With its huge budget,
LAND OF THE LOST may turn out to be a bigger turkey than TERMINATOR
SALVATION, which itself has slipped to eighth spot with a small
$4.7M.
STAR
TREK continues to hold well, taking out seventh spot and earning
another $5.4M over the weekend to take its domestic total to $231.8M.
The film is still the highest earner for 2009 and is one of the
big winners of the year. On the other hand, ANGELS
& DEMONS will have to rely on overseas grosses to push it
in to the black; the film ended up in ninth spot and earned $4.1M
over the weekend to take its domestic total to $123.2M.
Sam Raimi's return to horror with
DRAG ME TO HELL continues to chug along but not at very strong levels,
earning $3.9M over the weekend to take its domestic total to $35.2M.
The film appears to have been a fanboy's dream but that did not
translate to the mainstream audience which is a shame as all indications
are that the film is actually quite good.
The other new opener for the weekend
is Eddie Murphy's IMAGINE THAT which tanked out of the gate with
a measly $5.5M over the three days. The film cost $55M to make and
will become another one of Murphy's big losers, as audiences appear
to be tiring of his brand of comedy and entertainment.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $131,974,243 for the whole of the weekend 12-14 June 2009.
