Overall, the Box Office was up 9.5%
on last weekend's total gross.
Business at the box office this weekend
was spread out among a number of new films and holdovers.
Registering a big win in top spot
is Sandra Bullock with THE PROPOSAL, earning a fabulous $33.6M for
its opening weekend. Given bullock's track record in the past decade
of $15-20M openers, this is a huge boost for her star power, although
some might argue that her co-star Ryan Reynolds may have helped
a little. The film cost a small $40M, making it an instant winner.
Second spot goes to one of the surprise
powerhouse performers of the year, THE HANGOVER, which managed to
pull in a further $26.7M and lose only 18.4% of its audience from
last weekend. The film has earned a mammoth $152M domestically against
a tiny $35M budget and will likely be the biggest return on investment
for 2009.
Landing in third spot is Disney/Pixar's
UP which continues to pull in great numbers, adding a further $23.4M
over the weekend to take its domestic tally to $226M. Against a
$175M budget, the film is now enjoying the spoils of profit, as
Disney/Pixar have with all their previous animated releases.
The second opener for the weekend
is the not so spectacular YEAR ONE which managed a decent if not
that great $19.6M. This amount is right in line with Jack Black's
previous efforts, however, this one cost around $60M to make and
given word of mouth is less than average, the film will have trouble
recouping its budget back domestically.
THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 sufferred
a blow this weekend against all the new competition (and itself
perhaps), losing 48.5% of its audience to land in fifth spot with
$12M. The film cost $100M and has only earned $44M thus far, making
it one of Denzel Washington's less than good performers.
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE
SMITHSONIAN continues to chug along, earning $7.8M to take its total
to $156M and thus passing its production budget of $150M. Technically
now in the black, the film has still not performed to the lofty
heights of its predecessor and the jury will be out as to whether
or not there will be further films in the franchise.
STAR
TREK finds itself in the same position as last weekend, seventh,
earning a strong $5.5M to take its grand total to $240M. The film
actually increased its audience by 1% from last weekend and is still
currently the highest grossing film of 2009, although it will likely
acquiese to other titles such as UP and the upcoming TRANSFORMERS:
REVENGE OF THE FALLEN.
The only other story of note is that
TERMINATOR
SALVATION will spend its last weekend in the top 10, landing
in tenth spot with a paltry $3.2M this weekend. The film has only
managed $119M domestically against a $200M budget and has killed
the franchise.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $144,565,543 for the whole of the weekend 19-21 June 2009.
