Friday saw a 1.9% decrease in box
office revenue over the previous Friday.
Despite some new entries opening at
the box office on Wednesday, last Friday's number one film returns
to the spot again this Friday with an estimated $17.8M, TRANSFORMERS:
REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. This is actually a good result for the
massive blockbuster as this represents a 51.5% drop on last Friday
and considering the new competition that entered the market.
Landing in number two spot is ICE
AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS, which earned an estimated $17M on Friday.
The film opened on Wednesday to avoid the July 4 weekend and has
benefited as a result, earning $41.9M since that time. Given that
the latest entry in the Ice Age franchise is so close to Transformers
in terms of box office dollars, the film might actually take out
the top spot by the end of the weekend.
Third spot goes to the new Michael
Mann film PUBLIC ENEMIES, which took in an estimated $10.1M on Friday.
This film also opened on Wednesday to avoid the July 4 weekend and
has likewise benefited, pocketing $25M since opening. The gangster
thriller has also worked effectively as counter-programming for
adults, particularly with its star power angle with Johnny Depp
and Christian Bale in the lead roles.
Sandra Bullock must be very happy
with the box office performance of her new film THE PROPOSAL, which
took in a further estimated $5.1M on Friday and losing only a tiny
15% of its audience from last Friday. The film is currently sitting
on $86.6M in total domestic box office against a production budget
of $40M.
THE HANGOVER continues to move along
well, achieving the same percentage drop as THE PROPOSAL to pull
in an estimated $4.5M as it edges closer to $200M which it should
cross this weekend. The film has earned $198M thus far against a
small $35M budget with no stars.
The remaining box office estimates
for films on Friday are as follows: UP ($2.7M), MY SISTER'S KEEPER
($2.4M), THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3 ($0.96M), YEAR ONE ($0.93M),
and NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN ($0.8M).
The North American box office took
in an estimated total of $62.5 million for the whole of Friday 3rd
July 2009.
