Overall, the Box Office was down 19.4%
on last weekend's total gross.
TRANSFORMERS:
REVENGE OF THE FALLEN managed to hold on to top spot for a second
weekend in a row despite some strong competition entering the market
place. The film earned a decent $42.3M but dropped a massive 61%
on last weekend's stellar opening. Word of mouth has kicked in but
given the film has earned $293M domestically since opening, the
film is the year's biggest blockbuster success.
Opening in second spot is ICE AGE:
DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS which actually opened on Wednesday, but managed
to gross $41.6M over the weekend. Despite a bad reception, the film
has done extremely well, having earned $66.7M in five days against
a $90M budget. The continuation of this franchise is assured.
Third spot goes to Michael Mann's
new film, PUBLIC ENEMIES, which also opened on Wednesday and managed
a strong $25.2M over the course of the weekend. The film has earned
$40M since opening, but the budget was $100M which will make its
road to recouping its negative cost that much harder. This is another
example of a star-driven film not generating more business in the
wake of computer-generated folly and mindless action, although it
did reasonably well considering that competition.
THE PROPOSAL and THE HANGOVER held
on quite well, earning $12.8M and $11.2M respectively to take their
total domestic grosses to $94.3M and $205M respectively. Both films
are successes, particularly the latter which may be able to claim
the biggest return on investment of a wide release for 2009.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $155,486,083 for the whole of the weekend 3-5 July 2009.
