Friday saw a 25.7% decrease in box
office revenue over the previous Friday.
Returning to theatres in number one
spot for Friday is Sacha Baron Cohen with his new shockumentary
BRUNO, which managed an estimated $14.1M on Friday. This is up on
his previous opening Friday effort BORAT, leaving BRUNO to be another
big winner for the comedian although its subject matter may weaken
its legs and overall box office.
Second spot goes to ICE AGE: DAWN
OF THE DINOSAURS, which held well with an estimated $8.6M on Friday.
The film lost around 50% of its audience on last Friday which is
a good hold given the competition and its less than great word of
mouth. Against a $90M budget the film has now crossed the $100M
mark domestically.
TRANSFORMERS:
REVENGE OF THE FALLEN enters third spot for Friday, earning
an estimated $7.6M. The gloss is coming off this mega-blockbuster
rapidly, losing 58% of its audience on last Friday. However, the
film has earned a huge $322M since opening domestically and a further
$333M at the foreign box office, making this $200M investment a
huge winner.
Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES enters
fourth spot with an estimated $4.3M for Friday, down 57% on last
Friday. Although suffering a similar drop to Transformers, PUBLIC
ENEMIES did not have as far to fall and despite its $100M budget,
the film is chugging along nicely with $66M in the bank as it enters
its second week of release.
The only other opener in the Top 10
for Friday is the Fox rom-com I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER which sputtered
out of the gate with a very small estimate of $2M. Despite starring
young teen sensation Hayden Panettiere, the film is a virtual non-starter
and will disappear quickly.
The remaining box office estimates
for films on Friday are as follows: THE PROPOSAL ($3.4M), THE
HANGOVER ($3M), UP ($1.45M), MY SISTER'S KEEPER ($1.43M), and
NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN ($0.49M).
The North American box office took
in an estimated total of $46.7 million for the whole of Friday 10th
July 2009.
