Overall, the Box Office was up 12.8%
on last weekend's total gross.
The Harry Potter franchise showed
just how strong a box office phenomenon it is with the arrival of
the sixth installment HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE this
weekend earning a huge $77.8M. The film opened on Wednesday to a
huge $58M and has earned an impressive $158M over that five day
portion of the week. This is another huge win for distributor Warner
Brothers who effectively has a licence to print money with these
films. One interesting note however is that the film exhibited more
of a pent-up fanboy rush than previous entries, particularly with
the mammoth opening Wednesday, $20M or so coming from midnight screenings;
a record.
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS and
TRANSFORMERS:
REVENGE OF THE FALLEN managed to hold on reasonably well, and
keep the same spots as last weekend, in the wake of Harry Potter's
arrival, earning $17.5M and $13.6M respectively. The latter is holding
up better than expected given the film extremely average reception,
although it may still struggle to get to $400M domestically (barring
a miracle, it will still be the undisputed king of the 2009 box
office).
After a strong opening weekend, BRUNO
got absolutely hammered in its second weekend, earning a paltry
$8.3M and dropping a massive 73% on last weekend's total. Sacha
Baron Cohen's gay fashionista stereotype is not going over as well
as his previous ethnic racial stereotype character of BORAT, although
the film has made its budget back, now sitting with a combined domestic
and international box office total of $74.3M.
THE PROPOSAL and THE
HANGOVER managed to hold on to the same spots as last weekend
and continued to do great box office, earning $8.2M and $8.1M respectively.
The well received comedies have earned $128M and $235M respectively
at the domestic box office.
PUBLIC ENEMIES took a bit of a tumble
this weekend, dropping from fourth to seventh place, losing 44%
of its audience to earn another $7.7M over the weekend to take its
grand domestic box office total to $79M. The film is still a reasonable
change of getting $100M but will need international grosses to cover
its production costs.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $152,167,477 for the whole of the weekend 17-19 July 2009.
