Overall, the Box Office was down 7%
on last weekend's total gross.
The number one film for this weekend
is surprisingly not Harry Potters' lot but rather a computer animated
film from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer called G-FORCE. This $85M
budgeted guinea pig 3-D film earned an astonishing $31.7M over the
weekend to take out the top spot. The film is generally considered
a joke but its numbers are not, although this large opening can
be attributed to the high ticket price of 3-D cinemas.
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE
tumbled downward in to second spot this weekend as the lustre comes
right off this latest installment in the blockbuster franchise.
The film earned a decent $29.4M over the weekend, but lost 62% of
its audience from last weekend. The film is on target to reach a
similar final box office figure to its immediate predecessor, and
has so far earned $221M against a $250M budget.
Katherine Heigl is back in the new
rom-com THE UGLY TRUTH which managed a strong $27.6M to land in
third place over the weekend, despite out-grossing Harry Potter
on Friday. The R-rated comedy had a budget of $38M which makes this
a winner, although the dreadful reviews and reception will likely
make a huge dent in its overall box office in the coming weeks.
Opening in fourth spot is another
horror film ORPHAN, which managed a very typical amount over the
weekend for this genre with $12.8M. This will likely fall away like
others of its type as time passes.
The films in spots five to nine all
managed to hold reasonably well, with the biggest percentage drop
of those films going to ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS which dropped
52%. The film that got crunched severely this weekend however was
BRUNO, which dropped
all the way down to tenth spot with a paltry $2.8M. The film has
now earned a disappointing $56M after opening to over $30M two weeks
ago.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $141,528,932 for the whole of the weekend 24-26 July 2009.
