Overall, the Box Office was down 19.8%
on last weekend's total gross.
The US Box Office was quite sluggish
this weekend, not registering numbers of particular interest, nor
outright disaster.
Landing in first place is the Adam
Sandler-Seth Rogen comedy FUNNY PEOPLE, which despite starring two
big comedy stars and directed by Judd Apatow, managed a decent if
not spectacular $22.6M over the weekend. This is low for Sandler
in particularly who enjoys higher openings for his comedies. This
film cost $75M to make so the comedy which should have been a blockbuster
given the talent involved will have to work hard to make it a worthwhile
return on investment.
Harry Potter remains in second place
this weekend; HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE managed another
$17.9M to take its domestic total to $255M. Its ability to remain
in second spot was no doubt aided by the addition of 150 or so IMAX
screens which helped to push the latest Harry Potter flick ahead
of third place finisher G-FORCE which managed a slightly smaller
$17.5M.
The $45M budgeted ALIENS IN THE ATTIC
managed to earn a paltry $8M this weekend despite debuting on over
3,000 screens across North America. Looks for this to disappear
fast. The only other new opener was THE COLLECTOR, yet another torture
horror flick which only managed $3.5M from the weekend.
The US Box Office took in a total
of $113,496,999 for the whole of the weekend 31st July - 2nd August
2009.
