Friday saw a 25% increase in box office
revenue over the previous Friday.
1. G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra - $22.3M
2. Julie & Julia - $6.5M
3. G-Force - $3M
4. Funny People - $2.6M
5. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - $2.5M
6. The Ugly Truth - $2.2M
7. A Perfect Getaway - $2.1M
8. Aliens In The Attic - $1.3M
9. (500) Days Of Summer - $1.2M
10. Orphan - $1.19M
The latest dumb and loud blockbuster
to come out of Hollywood, G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, stormed out
of the gate to take a highly impressive estimate of $22.3M on Friday.
The Stephen Sommers directed action film is looking at a $50M+ opening
which is fairly good all said and done given the poor reception
it has received.
Director Nora Ephron returns to the
box office with JULIE & JULIA, starring the always fantastic
Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. The film earned a strong estimate of
$6.5M on Friday and should end up with a decent $15-$20M by the
end of the weekend.
G-FORCE managed to out-earn last Friday's
number one champ FUNNY PEOPLE, with the former earning an estimate
of $3M and the latter earning an estimate of $2.6M. Director Judd
Apatow has his first dudd with FUNNY PEOPLE starring two of the
current kings of cinematic comedy in Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen
but in a film that is decidedly not funny. As for G-FORCE, the cute
kiddie factor is continuing to push this one along well.
Stay tuned for a more comprehensive
wrap-up of the weekend box office in North America for 7-9 August
2009.
The Top 10 at the North American box
office took in an estimated total of $44.9 million for the whole
of Friday 7th August 2009.
