Registering a big win for distributor
Paramount is this weekend's number one film, G.I. JOE: THE RISE
OF COBRA, which managed an impressive $54M over three days. The
Stephen Sommers-directed flick managed to earn more than many pundits
predicted, but the reviews from critics and the general public appear
to be universally negative, which does not bode well for this film's
long term box office prospects.
Landing in second spot with a strong
$20M over the weekend is the far superior JULIE & JULIA, the
latest film to star veteran actress Meryl Streep. Given the subject
material, the film did incredibly well and will likely hold well
in the coming weeks.
G-FORCE is still doing well, earning
another $9.8M over the weekend. The guinea pigs have been running
riot for a few weeks now in all their animated glory. The film has
earned over $85M since opening.
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE
clocks up another $8.9M this weekend, taking its total domestic
box office take to $274M since opening. Despite having an incredibly
strong start, the film has lost momentum and will likely end up
earning in the vicinity of its two immediate predecessors, something
which did not appear likely given the blockbuster opening the film
had.
Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen plummeted
in their second weekend with FUNNY PEOPLE. The un-funny comedy from
director Judd Apatow dropped a precipitous 65% from last weekend,
spelling doom for the flick. The film has earned $40.5M since opening
and will have to work hard to peg back its $75M budget.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $132,038,549 for the whole of the weekend 7-9 August
2009.
