Four new films entered the market place on
Friday, all with drastically different performances at the box office.
This Friday saw a true find make its way to
the top of the box office; DISTRICT
9, the science-fiction action/thriller/drama took out top spot
with an estimated $14.2M, easily beating the rest of the competition.
Aside from Peter Jackson as the main producer, this film was directed
by a first-timer and starred absolutely no one. Coupled with the
fact that the subject matter is somewhat high concept and intelligent
for the standard mainstream blockbuster, and that the execution
of the film is more akin to an indie flick than a Hollywood film
and you have a rare film that managed to break out with the public
while still being original and unique.
Of the other three films that opened on Friday,
THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE did best with an estimated 7.7M. The romantic
film starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana did reasonably well.
The same cannot be said for the unusually titled THE GOODS: LIVE
HARD, SELL HARD and PONYO. The former a comedy and the latter an
animated CG flick with celebrity voices, neither seemed to set the
box office alight.
Last Friday's number one film G.I. JOE: THE
RISE OF COBRA crashed and burned this Friday, losing 68% of its
audience to earn a much smaller $7.1M. Word of mouth has set in,
and this film will be one of the other box office lemons to add
to the list for 2009.
Stay tuned for a more comprehensive
wrap-up of the weekend box office in North America for 14-16 August
2009.
The Top 10 at the North American box
office took in an estimated total of $41.8 million for the whole
of Friday 14th August 2009.
