DISTRICT
9, one the most intelligent, adult and unique science-fiction
films to come out in a long time was rewarded by the audience at
the box office this weekend with a very strong $37M. Produced by
Oscar-winner Peter Jackson and directed by first timer Neil Blomkamp,
the film has earned accolades for its unique, original and intellectually
engaging motifs, while still managing to satisfy in the action and
thrills departments. The film looks like it cost three times more
than its $30M production budget, and given the film is already in
the black after three days of release, look for this to be one of
the bigger winners for the year.
Last weekend's number one champ, G.I.
JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA, slips only in to second place this weekend
(it could have been worse given the poor reception it has received),
losing 59% of its audience to earn an additional $22.3M. The film
has yet to crack $100M and will struggle to earn back its $175M
budget at the domestic box office. Word of mouth has hit this one
hard, but not as hard as expected.
THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE had to settle
for third place on opening this weekend, earning a decent $18.6M.
The film cost $37M to make so it should have no problem recouping
its budget, and the film has served as effective counter-programming
to the more action and sci-fi driven films in the top two spots.
Two other films opened this weekend,
neither of which did anything special and can be seen as disappointments.
THE GOODS: LIVE HARD, SELL HARD and PONYO earned $5.6M and $3.5M
respectively.
Of the returning films, most managed
to continue doing decent business. Meryl Streep's latest gig in
JULIE & JULIA managed another $12M this weekend, taking its
total to $43M against a $40M budget. The guinea-pig feast from Jerry
Bruckheimer G-FORCE earned $6.9M and is just about to cross $100M
domestically. HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE earned another
$5.1M over the weekend to take its domestical tally to $283M. And
the critically and popularly bashed THE UGLY TRUTH managed to muster
another $4.4M to take its total to a healthy $77M against a $38M
budget. All the films in this batch have proved to be good winners
relative to their production budgets.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $124,812,512 for the whole of the weekend 14-16 August
2009.
