Overall, the US Box Office was down
1.6% on last weekend's gross.
Horror came back in a big way this
weekend with two new entries competing for the same audience. Both
films did well, although landing in number one spot as the clear
winner is THE FINAL DESTINATION with a healthy $27.4M over the weekend.
This new entry in the franchise had the 3D gimmick going for it,
as well as the inflated ticket price. The film cost $40M so this
is a great result. The other horror film, HALLOWEEN II, also did
well with a more typical opening of $16.3M. However, with the film's
much smaller $15M budget, this is a solid win as well.
Last weekend's number one film INGLOURIOUS
BASTERDS lost 49% of its audience but still managed a healthy $19.3M
to take its domestic total to $73M against a $70M budget. Director
Quentin Tarantino has a big success with this new film, although
it is following the fanboy-rush pattern of his previous films with
big opening weekends and solid drops in subsequent weekends.
DISTRICT
9, one of this year's big winners, is continuing on its merry
way, adding another $10.2M to take its domestic box office tally
to $90M against a $30M budget. The film lost only 43.6% of its audience
on last weekend and should cross the $100M barrier some time in
the next week.
The only other new opener for the
weekend is the $30M-budgeted TAKING WOODSTOCK which did not manage
a very box office total at all with a paltry $3.4M despite being
shown in far fewer venues than the other films in the Top 12.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $109,804,771 for the whole of the weekend 28-30 August
2009.
