Overall, the US Box Office was down
26.1% on last weekend's gross.
The US Box Office had one of the weakest
weekends of the year with three new openers barely making a dent
in to the overall box office picture. Even with the Labor Day public
holiday on the 7th, the films on show this weekend did not do much
business.
As an indication of how slow business
was, the top 2 films this weekend repeat their positions from last
weekend. THE FINAL DESTINATION took out top spot with $12.3M and
Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS
BASTERDS took out second place with $11.6M. The makers of the
former film will have to be ecstatic at this result, particularly
as it now pushes this film towards the highest gross of the franchise.
Look for another Final Destination sequel to eventuate.
Third and fourth spot are reserved
for two films opening this weekend that hardly set the world on
fire. ALL ABOUT STEVE, the latest Sandra Bullock comedy took out
third with $11.2M. This film has been absolutely slammed by everyone
and it is likely only Bullock's appeal got this film to eight figures.
Unlike her earlier film this year THE PROPOSAL, this film is likely
to disappear very quickly. In the opposite direction of genre is
GAMER, the violent action thriller starring Gerard Butler. The high
concept film was received about as well as ALL ABOUT STEVE, leaving
this film with similar future box office prospects.
The lower budget sci-fi darling of
the year DISTRICT
9 continues on its merry way, earning another $7M this weekend
to take its domestic total to $101M. Now having crossed the $100M
mark, the film is still earning great dollars relative to its budget
(and no recogniseable stars both in front of and behind the camera
save legendary producer Peter Jackson).
HALLOWEEN II was able to generate
some good business last weekend with THE FINAL DESTINATION but it
came crashing down to Earth this weekend, dropping all the way to
sixth with a paltry $5.7M. However, the film has earned $25M against
its tiny $15M budget so expect to see part three showing up shortly.
The only other new opener this weekend
is EXTRACT, the new low budget comedy from Mike Judge of OFFICE
SPACE fame. The film earned a small $4.3M over the weekend.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $81,118,801 for the whole of the weekend 4-6 September
2009. Including the Labor Day gross on the 7th, the total is $102,945,062.
