Overall, the US Box Office was down
5.2% on last weekend's gross.
The September doldrums continue at
the box office with the overall weekend gross of the Top 12 down
further on last weekend's lowish score. The number one film did
some decent business in the return of Tyler Perry with I CAN DO
BAD ALL BY MYSELF. Virtually replicating his previous successes
to a tee, the film earned a solid $23.4M. Tyler Perry is in effect
a cottage industry now, churning out moderate winners on a consistent
basis.
Opening in second is the unusual animated
flick for adults 9, which managed a decent $10.7M. Based on a successful
short film, this feature version cost around $33M to make, but it
may struggle to get there with this opening.
The other new openers for this weekend
barely caused a stir in SORORITY ROW (in sixth place with $5.5M)
and WHITEOUT (in seventh place with $4.1M)). The former is proof
that just because a film is horror does not mean legions of people
will show up to it, particularly if it is really bad as this film
apparently is. The latter, a thriller set in Antarctica received
even worse reviews despite starring the lovely Kate Beckinsale.
Both films should tank appropriately and disappear without a trace
shortly.
The returning films did not carry
over much business this weekend, leading to the overall depressed
nature of the box office.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $76,901,812 for the whole of the weekend 11-13 September
2009.
