Overall, the US Box Office was down
4.8% on last weekend's gross.
September at the US Box Office finished
in much the same fashion as all of its weekends with a somewhat
subdued and dull earnings report, despite the appearance of three
openers which should have done much better given the competition.
Number one spot is taken again by
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS. The film earned $25M, losing
only 17% of its audience in its second weekend and pushing its total
domestic box office to $60M. This film has turned out to be a win
for distributor Sony who may not have known what they had given
the mediocre marketing effort given to this animated flick. The
film still has to work to recoup its $100M budget but it is well
on the way to doing so.
Finishing a distant second is the
first opener for the weekend, the Bruce Willis sci-fi flick SURROGATES,
which stumbled out of the gate with an average $14.9M. The film
has not been well received and will likely stay in the red, given
its large $80M budget. A similar
fate was bestowed upon the much-hyped remake FAME, which did less
well with only $10M in the kitty over the weekend. Unlike SURROGATES
however, the film only had a tiny $18M budget which should see it
turn a profit at some point in the next week or two. The
other new opener for the weekend is the sci-fi/horror flick PANDORUM,
which is a big misfire for distributor Overture Films, having spent
$40M to make it. The film only managed a paltry $4.4M over the weekend.
Of the returning films, only THE INFORMANT!
and TYLER PERRY'S I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF managed to muster up
some decent repeat business with $6.6M and $4.7M respectively, both
proving to be decent money earners.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $83,038,469 for the whole of the weekend 25-27 September
2009.
