Everything was about the new Twilight
film this Friday, NEW MOON, which has done something unprecedented
and taken out the biggest box office opening day record of all time
with an astonishing estimate of $72.7 million. To put that in context,
the previous record holder THE
DARK KNIGHT opened to $67.2 million. This performance is testament
to how big a phenomenon the Twilight saga has become. However, the
film is experiencing the 'fan-boy' factor (or in this case, 'fan-girl'),
and will likely see a drop off quite quickly; that will not stop the
film from earning well over $100 million in its opened weekend, which
is quite amazing.
Other films did open on Friday, with
THE BLIND SIDE getting a decent estimate of $10.9 million, while the
animated PLANET 51 got lost in the shuffle with a much smaller estimate
of $3.1 million.
Another record was also surpassed thanks
to NEW MOON this Friday: the film also helped generate the biggest
one-day box office record in history at $104 million, with the previous
record being $97.5 million.
Stay tuned for a more comprehensive
wrap-up of the weekend box office in North America for 20th-22nd November
2009.
The Top 10 at the North American box
office took in an estimated total of $103.99 million for the whole
of Friday 20th November 2009.
