Overall, the US Box Office was down
48% on last weekend's gross.
The box office was bolstered mostly
by the strong performance of returning films this weekend; new films
had quieter openings overall.
The story of the weekend, as it was
last weekend, is THE BLIND SIDE, which in its third weekend of release,
shot in to first place with $20 million. Although the film was down
50% on last weekend's gross, this is a stellar achievement for a
film that started in the shadow of a certain vampire flick and managed
to go all the way to the top. The film has earned a strong $129
million against a $29 million budget.
Continuing to crash in second place
is NEW MOON,
which dropped another 64% to record another $15.4 million against
its name. After reaching stratospheric heights only a fortnight
ago, the vampire film has now lost most of its steam with most of
the fans now having seen it. The film has now earned $255 million
against a $50 million budget.
New openers for the weekend include
BROTHERS, ARMORED and EVERYBODY'S FINE, which did not break double
digits over the weekend. BROTHERS fared best with $9.5 million,
but action flick ARMORED did not do so well landing in seventh spot
with $6.5 million, while EVERYBODY'S FINE had to settle for a small
$3.8 million.
One other film worth mentioning is
A CHRISTMAS CAROL, the Robert Zemeckis motion capture animated film.
The film has had great legs since it opened five weeks ago and managed
to leap in to fourth spot this weekend with $7.7 million. It still
has a way to go to recoup its $200 million budget with its $115
million tally so far but it should be helped by the impending Christmas
season over the next month.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $91,437,807 for the whole of the weekend 4-6 December
2009.
