This Friday saw the return of traditional
Disney animation with the opening of THE PRINCESS OF THE FROG, and
it easily took out top spot with an estimated $7 million. This is
a good start for a genre that has been dead in the water for years,
particularly after the advent of computer animated films. Reviews
have been very good, although it may take a while for Disney to regain
its feet in this genre, given the competition and the fact they have
not been doing it for a number of years.
The other new opener on Friday saw the
return of director Clint Eastwood with another December opening film
in INVICTUS, the story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the
captain of the South African rugby team to try and unite the country.
Eastwood has had a spectacular decade, creating films for the 'oscar'
audience (which is further exemplified by Eastwood's December release
pattern) and this film looks to follow the same formula. Opening on
fewer screens than other films in the Top 10, INVICTUS had a decent
start with an estimated $2.9 million.
THE BLIND SIDE continues to do well
although it has slowed down compared to its stellar run in the past
few weeks. The film only dropped 30% on last Friday's estimates and
has a fantastic $140 million in the bank thus far.
Stay tuned for a more comprehensive
wrap-up of the weekend box office in North America for 11th-13th December
2009.
The Top 10 at the North American box
office took in an estimated total of $24.6 million for the whole of
Friday 11th December 2009.
