Traditional 2-D Disney Animation made
a come back of sorts this weekend with their newest offering since
the genre fizzled out a decade ago, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, topped
the box office with a solid $24.2 million over the weekend. This
is okay given the dormant nature of 2-D cartoon animation, but the
film does carry a $100+ million price tag and will need strong legs
to get that money back.
For what seems to be a December tradition
now, director Clint Eastwood returns with his latest attempt at
Oscar glory with INVICTUS, opening with a decent $8.6 million over
the weekend. Although not as marketable as some of his previous
efforts, the film should do well through to the awards season.
Returning films THE BLIND SIDE and
NEW MOON did
well, particularly in the case of the former only losing 25% of
its audience from last weekend to earn $15 million. THE BLIND SIDE
is one of the year's big winners and impressive performers. The
vampire flick NEW
MOON on the other hand had a smaller drop of 48% compared to
previous weekend but the film has seriously run out of steam, although
it has now earned $267 million domestically against a $50 million
budget.
Overall, the US Box Office did not
do anything stellar this weekend, recording its fourth successive
drop in a row since the mind-blowing opening of NEW
MOON.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $87,317,894 for the whole of the weekend 11-13 December
2009.
