Overall, the US Box Office was up
100% on last weekend's gross.
With Christmas Day falling on Friday
this year, the weekend box office saw a mammoth increase in ticket
sales with the general public taking advantage of the holiday Friday.
Many films registered big grosses, both new and returning films.
Our number one film is the 3D hit
AVATAR, which
managed to take out top spot for a second weekend in a row while
only losing 1% of its audience. The film earned a fantastic $75.6
million and has now earned $212.7 million domestically.
Not to be outdone was Guy Ritchie's
new film SHERLOCK
HOLMES which managed an excellent $62.3 million over the weekend
to land in second place. Reviews and reception were better than
expected and will likely continue to do great business.
ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL
cemented itself in third spot with a strong $48.8 million over the
weekend, and solidifying this franchise for some time to come.
Fourth place goes to the counter-programmed
film IT'S COMPLICATED, which earned a very good $22.1 million on
opening. The Meryl Streep-Alec Baldwin-Steve Martin rom-com did
quite well in face of all the strong competition.
Being the last official weekend for
the year, the box office went out with a bang, and is likely to
start the new year with a bang given New Year's Day also falls on
a Friday.
The Top 12 at the US Box Office took
in a total of $259,923,186 for the whole of the weekend 25-27 December
2009.
