Overall, the
US Box Office was down 29% on last weekend's gross.
Another weekend,
and another set of records fall to AVATAR,
now an absolutely bonafide phenomenon and rocketing closer towards
TITANIC's number one spot in the worldwide box office rankings with
a current tally of $1.34 billion. James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic
hit first place again with a record breaking fourth weekend total
of $50.3 million to take its total domestic tally to $430.8 million
in 24 days. Although the film has benefited from the premium prices
of 3D screenings, this should not take away from the film's long
lasting impact on the box office. James Cameron has done it again.
Second and third
spot were taken by the usual suspects in SHERLOCK
HOLMES and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL, earning
$16.58 million and $16.55 million respectively, which in the end
was quite a tight race for second spot. Both are big winners for
their respective studios, although they have had to do it in AVATAR's
shadow. They have now earned domestically $165.1 million and $178.4
million respectively.
We have to go
all the way to fourth spot to hit our first new opener for the weekend,
DAYBREAKERS. The vampire flick managed an okay $15.1 million but
did not do much to break through the hefty competition. This hardly
matters as the film cost a small $20 million so it's a decent win
for distributor Lionsgate.
IT'S COMPLICATED
still generated decent business from the weekend, adding another
$11 million to take its total domestic tally to $76.3 million. The
film cost $85 million, which it should recoup over the course of
the next week.
Two other new
films debuted this weekend, albeit quietly, in LEAP YEAR and YOUTH
IN REVOLT. The films earned $9.2 million and $6.8 million respectively,
both against a roughly $18-19 million budget. Both films have hardly
done much at the box office but with such small budgets they should
recoup costs without a problem.
