A number of
new releases on Friday still could not stop AVATAR's
impressive run, with the 3D blockbuster chalking up another $9.1 million
to take top spot. The film has $525 million in the bank and will pass
THE DARK KNIGHT's
domestic total by the end of the weekend.
Three new
films entered the market place, averaging from okay to below average
for their box office report cards. LEGION opened to $6.7 million,
which is about right for a horror/thriller, THE TOOTH FAIRY somehow
managed $3.5 million as it proved that there is an audience for The
Rock dressed in a tutu, and EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES barely registered
with anyone with its low $2 million take on Friday. It seems Harrison
Ford is a pale shadow of his former box office self, or his measures
were not that extraordinary for this film.
THE BOOK OF
ELI managed to hold reasonably well, earning an estimated $4.9 million
to take third spot, but it is down 58% on last Friday's take.
Stay
tuned for a more comprehensive wrap-up of the weekend box office in
North America for 22-24 January 2010.
The
Top 10 at the North American box office took in an estimated total
of $35.2 million for the whole of Friday 22nd January 2010.
