Two
new films attempted to displace AVATAR
from the top of the box office but failed to succeed. Mel Gibson's
first starring role in eight years, EDGE OF DARKNESS, started in a
fairly average fashion with an estimated $5.6 million on Friday. The
film, which features more than a passing resemblance to last year's
solid revenge flick TAKEN,
may struggle at the box office and is a sign that Mel Gibson's recent
reputation has affected his star status. The other opener, WHEN IN
ROME, failed to impress as well, with a paltry $4.4 million. The Kristen
Bell romantic comedy may disappear fairly quickly at this rate.
AVATAR
is once again at the top of the box office, taking in an estimated
$7.3 million on Friday. Now the biggest world-wide earning film of
all time, and soon to be the highest grossing US domestic film of
all time, AVATAR
shows no signs of slowing. The film has earned $571.7 million domestically
and $1.92 billion world-wide.
