Overall, the US Box Office was down 14% on last weekend's gross.

AVATAR triumphantly took out top spot for the seventh weekend in a row with $31.2 million. The film recorded the record for biggest seventh weekend, became the first film to make $2 billion world wide, and is only $5-6 million short of taking out TITANIC's domestic box office record; it now sits at $595.7 million.

Way back in second place is Mel Gibson's return to acting with EDGE OF DARKNESS. The film did an okay $17.2 million over the weekend, but this figure clearly shows that Mel's star power is definitely not what it used to be, especially considering the action/revenge nature of the film. The film cost a healthy $80 million and it will need staying power to recoup that money.

Third spot goes to WHEN IN ROME, the Kristen Bell rom-com starring vehicle. The film managed an average $12.3 million from the weekend, but is likely to have a lower budget which means it could break even domestically.

Returning films THE TOOTH FAIRY, THE BOOK OF ELI, and LEGION, held on decently, earning $9.9 million, $8.9 million and $7.1 million respectively. The surprise is THE TOOTH FAIRY which outgrossed the other two films, yet it is far from recouping its production budget. ELI and LEGION on the other hand are sitting pretty, having recouped most if not all of their respective budgets.

THE LOVELY BONES managed another $4.7 million, taking its total to a paltry $38 million against a $65 million budget. Chalk this one up as a loser for star director Peter Jackson. SHERLOCK HOLMES is closing in on $200 million domestic, earning $4.5 million to take its total to $197.6 million.

The Top 12 at the US Box Office took in a total of $109,793,205 for the whole of the weekend 29-31 January 2010.
