After ruling at the top for weeks on end, AVATAR may have finally met a contender for the throne with DEAR JOHN, the romantic film that despite not being well reviewed managed an astonishing $13.7 million on Friday, comfortably taking out top spot. DEAR JOHN is looking at a big weekend.

AVATAR in the mean time still pulled in a strong $6.1 million despite moving in to second place. The mammoth blockbuster has earned $612.6 million domestically.

The other new opener 0n Friday was FROM PARIS WITH LOVE, the new film from TAKEN director Pierre Morel, which managed an okay $2.9 million. The film cost $52 million and will need a bit of luck to get that back domestically.
