Overall, the
US Box Office was up 89.7%% on last weekend's gross.
This weekend
saw a slew of new releases which shared decent business between
them and raised the box office to a strong level.
Opening in top
spot on Valentine's Day weekend like the marketing dream it was
no doubtedly planned to be is VALENTINE'S DAY, the rom-com starring
most of Hollywood which took off out of the gate with an impressive
$56.2 million. The film opened above estimates, and managed to recoup
its entire production budget of $52 million in those three days,
making it a big winner.
Troubled production
THE WOLFMAN managed a decent $31.4 million on opening this weekend.
The film, which was originally scheduled to open back in 2008, has
been plagued with problems and given the lukewarm response to the
film, may be in trouble as it cost $150 million to make.
Snapping at
THE WOLFMAN's heels is PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING
THIEF which came in a very close third with $31.2 million over the
weekend. The fantasy flick cost $95 million to make so is more of
a safe bet to recoup its production budget, but it is hard to predict
where it will go from here.
It may have
slipped to fourth place, but AVATAR
is still pulling out the stops, managed to increase its audience
by 3% on last weekend to earn another $23.6 million to break the
ninth biggest weekend record. The film has now earned in excess
of $660 million, and will only be stopped by the pending new 3D
releases due to come out in the next few months.
Despite a big
weekend last weekend, DEAR JOHN fell to fifth place with $16 million,
losing 47% of its audience on last weekend. VALENTINE'S DAY no doubt
took away its audience, but its lukewarm response has not helped
either.
