Two
new films battled it out as they opened on Friday, with the jury still
out on which one will come out on top as their estimates are so close.
COP OUT and THE CRAZIES managed an estimated $5.975 million and $5.97
million respectively, but neither took out top spot, with both films
battling it out for second and third. These are decent enough openings
for what looks like an average cop comedy and a horror film, but it
remains to be seen who will come out on top over the course of the
weekend.
SHUTTER
ISLAND successfully held on to top spot again with a commanding
lead, earning an estimated $6.67 million, down 52% on last Friday's
gross. This is a good holdover considering the film is receiving a
lukewarm response, at least for a Martin Scorsese film, so it should
do well this weekend.
AVATAR
enters its final weekend of 3D screens, earning an estimated $3.1
million to take its domestic total to $696 million. This will be the
weekend that it becomes the first film to cross $700 million domestic;
with ALICE IN WONDERLAND about to take its 3D screens, this will likely
be the beginning of the end of the film's dream run since December
last year.
