Overall, the
US Box Office was down 13% on last weekend's gross.
SHUTTER
ISLAND managed to hold on quite comfortably to top spot for
a second weekend, earning $22.6 million this weekend. The film dropped
only 45% on last weekend which is astounding for the genre it occupies,
but this may have something to do with the star director and actor
combination in Martin Scorsese and Leonardo Dicaprio. The film has
earned a healthy $75.5 million since opening, all against an $80
million budget.
The real battle
at the box office this weekend occurred for the two films vying
for second place. In the end, COP OUT won, earning a surprisingly
decent $18.2 million to take second spot. The average-looking comedy
has turned out to be director Kevin Smith's best offering, despite
reports it is his worst film to date. All of this is for nought
as the film only cost $30 million to make and will turn a profit
by the end of next weekend.
THE CRAZIES
had to settle for third spot, but managed a very good $16 million
weekend. Turning out to be better than expected, the horror film
has just about returned all of its production budget of $20 million
on opening, and looks to be another healthy winner for distributor
Overture.
AVATAR's
last weekend in 3D cinemas finished with a bang, with the film taking
a strong $13.6 million in its eleventh weekend, and in the process
becoming the first film to cross $700 million at the domestic box
office. It will lose 3D screens to ALICE IN WONDERLAND next weekend,
which probably signals the beginning of the end of its record breaking
run.
