I did not have a great expectation of this movie. I thought it would be a movie that would just entertain my children on a hot winter day while they were out of school. I really did not think that any adult would find this movie in any way engaging. I was wrong. Right off the back from the beginning credit I found myself drawn into this story and engrossed in the entree that there could be another world that I could not see nor hear. From the beginning the writers of this movie took a very fast approach to introduce the audience to this unseen world by having the rebel child of all the characters introduce himself to the guardian of the book "The Field Manual", a book that chronicles all the secrets of this unseen world, rather good or bad. And the bad is what the dark side wanted, the bad secrets to rule the world and to become the supreme leader of the unseen and seen world. Simon and his twin brother Jarad are played by Freddie Highmore. Simon is the rebel that stumbles onto the field manual. He disobeys a not that is post on the manual to not open or read it. He looks past this warning and proceeds to read and study the manual. Freddie's character in the beginning really bugged me. His character was a snotty nosed boy that wanted his way and worked to discourage everyone else in the movie. Especially, his mother who he did not respect because of a separation of her and Simon's father. Freddie plays Simon perfectly and to the surprise of the audience ends up saving the day. Other cast include Halen (the mother) played by Mary-Louise
Parker. Halen is just trying to get over the separation and start
a new life with all the children. She is moving into a new town and
trying to bring everyone together to form a harmonious family. The remaining characters include Sarah Bolger (Mallory), Martin Short (Thimbletack), Seth Rogen (Hogsqueal), David Strathairn (Arthur Spiderwick), Joan Plowright (Aunt Lucinda). This is a great movie for all the family, very enjoyable and easy to digest with the information provided. Get your online rental movies in the mail with no hassle. Also see: Video Game Rental.
